A great weekend trip does not need a big budget — just a bit of planning. Here is the process we use.
Step 1: Pick a destination within five hours
Travel time eats into short trips. Choose somewhere reachable by an overnight train, bus or a short drive so you get two full days.
Step 2: Travel on off-peak days
Leaving on Friday night and returning late Sunday often costs less than Saturday morning departures, and you save a night of accommodation.
Step 3: Book accommodation early
- Compare homestays, hostels and budget hotels.
- Read the most recent reviews, not just the rating.
- Check whether breakfast is included.
Step 4: Plan one highlight per day
Over-packed itineraries lead to rushing. Choose one main experience each day and leave room to wander.
Step 5: Set a daily spending limit
Decide on a budget for food, local transport and entry tickets. Using UPI or a travel card makes tracking easy.
Packing checklist
Chargers, a power bank, ID, a reusable water bottle, basic medicines and one layer for changing weather.
