The most expensive mistake a founder can make is building something nobody wants. Validation is how you find out cheaply — before you write code or rent an office.
Week 1: Define the problem
Write one sentence describing who has the problem and why it hurts. Then talk to at least 15 people who fit that description. Ask about their current workaround, not whether they like your idea.
Week 2: Build a simple landing page
Describe the outcome you promise, add a clear price and a “Join the waitlist” or “Pre-order” button. Tools like no-code site builders make this a one-day job.
Week 3: Drive small, targeted traffic
- Share in niche communities where your audience already gathers.
- Run a small ad test with a strict daily budget.
- Publish one helpful guest post on a relevant website to reach new readers.
Week 4: Measure and decide
Look at sign-up rate, replies and pre-orders. A few percent of visitors taking action is a strong signal. Almost none? Revisit the problem, the audience or the promise — and test again.
The takeaway
Validation is not about being right the first time. It is about learning fast and spending little while you do.
